About this book
14 Famous Passages from the Hebrew Bible, Line by Line, with Transliteration, English Translation and Free Audio
Read the Bible in its own language, one line at a time.
This workbook takes fourteen of the best-known passages of the Hebrew Bible and walks you through each one, word by word and line by line. It is made for adult beginners who know the Hebrew letters and vowels, even slowly, and want to read Scripture in Hebrew for themselves.
With free audio: scan the QR code inside and hear every line and every key word read in Israeli Hebrew.
Every passage is given four times:
- The passage itself, in large Hebrew letters with full vowels, as it is printed in a Hebrew Bible
- Key words, each with its sound and meaning, taken apart into pieces so you can see "and", "the", "my" and "your" inside the word
- Line by line: every line in Hebrew, then in English letters, then a plain English translation that follows the Hebrew word order
- Practice: matching, reading without help, and a page without vowels, the way a Torah scroll is written
The fourteen passages, from the shortest to the longest:
The Priestly Blessing (Numbers 6) - How good and how pleasant (Psalm 133) - What is good (Micah 6:8) - Where you go, I will go (Ruth 1) - Hear, O Israel (Deuteronomy 6) - The call of Abram (Genesis 12) - I lift up my eyes (Psalm 121) - The LORD is my shepherd (Psalm 23) - A time for everything (Ecclesiastes 3) - Swords into plowshares (Isaiah 2) - Happy is the one (Psalm 1) - The Ten Commandments (Exodus 20) - Comfort, comfort My people (Isaiah 40) - In the beginning (Genesis 1)
Also inside:
- A one-page guide to the Hebrew sounds, and a page on the small pieces Hebrew joins to its words
- A glossary of every key word, and an answer key
- Large 8.5 x 11 inch format with big Hebrew letters
The Hebrew is the traditional Masoretic text, with vowels and without the chanting marks. The divine name is read Adonai and translated "the LORD", as in most English Bibles. The translation is our own: plain, close to the Hebrew, and neutral, for Christian and Jewish readers alike.
