Ha lachma anya di achalu avhatana be'ara demitsrayim.
This is the bread of affliction that our fathers ate in the land of Egypt.
Kol dichfin yeitei veyeichol, kol ditsrich yeitei veyifsach.
Let all who are hungry come and eat; let all who are in need come and share the Pesach.
Hashata hacha, leshana haba'a be'ara deyisra'el.
Now we are here; next year in the land of Israel.
Hashata avdei, leshana haba'a benei chorin.
Now we are slaves; next year, free people.
Ma nishtana halayla haze mikol haleilot?
Why is this night different from all other nights?
Shebechol haleilot anu ochelin chamets umatsa, halayla haze
On all other nights we eat leavened bread and matzah; this night,
Kulo matsa. shebechol haleilot anu ochelin she'ar yerakot
all of it is matzah. On all other nights we eat other vegetables;
Halayla haze (kulo) maror.
this night (all of it) maror.
On all other nights we do not dip even one time;
Halayla haze shetei fe'amim.
this night, two times.
Shebechol haleilot anu ochelin bein yoshevin uvein mesubin
On all other nights we eat either sitting or leaning;
Halayla haze kulanu mesubin.
this night, all of us are leaning.
Avadim hayinu lefaro bemitsrayim,
We were slaves to Pharaoh in Egypt,
Vayotsi'enu Adonai eloheinu misham beyad chazaka uvizroa' netuya.
and the Lord our God brought us out from there with a strong hand and an outstretched arm.
Ve'ilu lo hotsi hakadosh baruch hu et avoteinu mimitsrayim,
If the Holy One, blessed be He, had not brought our fathers out of Egypt,
Harei anu uvaneinu uvnei vaneinu meshu'badim hayinu lefaro bemitsrayim.
then we, our children, and our children's children would still be slaves to Pharaoh in Egypt.
Va'afilu kulanu chachamim kulanu nevonim kulanu zekenim
And even if all of us were wise, all of us understanding, all of us elders,
Kulanu yode'im et hatora mitsva aleinu lesaper bitsi'at mitsrayim.
all of us knowing the Torah, it is a commandment for us to tell about the going out of Egypt.
Vechol hamarbe lesaper bitsi'at mitsrayim harei ze meshubach.
And whoever tells more about the going out of Egypt is praiseworthy.
Ma'ase verabi eli'ezer verabi yehoshua'
It happened that Rabbi Eliezer and Rabbi Joshua

and Rabbi Elazar ben Azariah and Rabbi Akiva

Vehayu mesaperim bitsi'at mitsrayim kol-oto halayla,
and were telling about the going out of Egypt all that night,

Higia' zeman keri'at shema shel shacharit.
the time for reading the morning Shema has come.
Amar rabi elazar ben-azarya
Rabbi Elazar ben Azariah said:
Harei ani keven shivim shana velo zachiti
Here I am, like a man of seventy years, and I did not merit
Shete'amer yetsi'at mitsrayim baleilot ad shederashah ben zoma,
that the going out of Egypt be mentioned at night, until Ben Zoma explained it,
Shene'emar, lema'an tizkor et yom tsetecha
as it is said: So that you remember the day you went out
Me'erets mitsrayim kol yemei chayecha. yemei chayecha hayamim.
of the land of Egypt all the days of your life. The days of your life: the days.
Kol yemei chayecha haleilot.
All the days of your life: the nights.
Vachachamim omerim yemei chayecha haolam haze.
And the Sages say: The days of your life: this world.
Kol yemei chayecha lehavi limot hamashiach
All the days of your life: to include the days of the Messiah.
Baruch hamakom, baruch hu,
Blessed is the Omnipresent, blessed is He.
Blessed is He who gave the Torah to His people Israel, blessed is He.
Keneged arba'a vanim dibera tora echad chacham, ve'echad rasha,
The Torah speaks about four sons: one wise, and one wicked,
Ve'echad tam, ve'echad she'eino yodea' lishol.
one simple, and one who does not know how to ask.
Chacham ma hu omer?
What does the wise one say?
What are the testimonies, the laws, and the rulings that the Lord our God commanded you?
Ve'af ata emor lo kehilchot hapesach
And you, too, tell him the laws of Pesach:
Ein maftirin achar hapesach afikoman
After the Pesach offering, one may not add any dessert (afikoman).
What does the wicked one say? What is this service to you?
Lachem velo lo.
To you and not to him.
Ulfi shehotsi et atsmo min hakelal kafar be'ikar.
And because he took himself out of the community, he denied the main principle.
And you, too, blunt his teeth and say to him:
"ba'avur ze asa Adonai li betseti mimitsrayim". li velo-lo.
"Because of this the Lord did for me when I went out of Egypt." For me, and not for him.
Ilu haya sham, lo haya nigal
Had he been there, he would not have been redeemed.
Tam ma hu omer? ma zot.
What does the simple one say? What is this?
Ve'amarta elav "bechozek yad hotsi'anu Adonai mimitsrayim mibeit avadim".
And you shall say to him: "With a strong hand the Lord brought us out of Egypt, from the house of slavery."
Veshe'eino yodea' lishol
And the one who does not know how to ask,
At petach lo, shene'emar, vehigadta levincha bayom hahu lemor,
you must open the subject for him, as it is said: And you shall tell your son on that day, saying,
Ba'avur ze asa Adonai li betseti mimitsrayim.
"Because of this the Lord did for me when I went out of Egypt."
Yachol merosh chodesh? talmud lomar bayom hahu.
One might think: from the start of the month? The verse teaches: on that day.
I vayom hahu yachol mibeod yom?
If it says on that day, one might think: while it is still daytime?
Talmud lomar ba'avur ze ba'avur ze lo amarti,
The verse teaches: because of this. I did not say "because of this"
Ela besha'a sheyesh matsa umaror munachim lefanecha.
except at the time when matzah and maror are placed before you.
Mitechila ovedei avoda zara hayu avoteinu,
In the beginning our fathers were idol worshipers,
Ve'achshav kerevanu hamakom la'avodato, shene'emar
and now the Omnipresent has brought us near to His service, as it is said:
And Joshua said to all the people: Thus says the Lord, God of Israel,
Be'ever hanahar yashevu avoteichem meolam,
Beyond the river your fathers lived long ago,
Terach avi avraham va'avi nachor, vaya'avdu elohim acherim.
Terah, father of Abraham and father of Nahor, and they served other gods.
Va'ekach et-avichem et-avraham me'ever hanahar vaolech oto bechol-erets kena'an,
And I took your father Abraham from beyond the river and led him through all the land of Canaan,
and I multiplied his offspring and gave him Isaac. And to Isaac I gave Jacob and Esau,
and to Esau I gave Mount Seir to possess it,
Veya'akov uvanav yaredu mitsrayim.
but Jacob and his sons went down to Egypt.
Baruch shomer havtachato leyisra'el, baruch hu.
Blessed is He who keeps His promise to Israel, blessed is He.
Shehakadosh baruch hu chishav et-hakets,
For the Holy One, blessed be He, calculated the end,
La'asot kemo she'amar le'avraham avinu bivrit bein habetarim, shene'emar
to do as He said to our father Abraham at the Covenant between the Pieces, as it is said:
Vayomer le'avram,
And He said to Abram,
Yadoa' teda ki-ger yihye zaracha be'erets lo lahem,
You shall surely know that your offspring will be strangers in a land not theirs,
Va'avadum ve'inu otam arba meot shana.
and they will serve them, and they will afflict them, four hundred years.
Vegam et-hagoy asher ya'avodu
And also the nation that they will serve,
Dan anochi ve'acharei-chen yetseu birchush gadol.
I will judge, and afterward they will go out with great wealth.
Vehi she'ameda la'avoteinu velanu.
And it is this that has stood by our fathers and by us.
Shelo echad bilvad amad aleinu lechalotenu,
For not just one has stood against us to destroy us,
Ela shebechol dor vador omedim aleinu lechalotenu,
but in every generation they stand against us to destroy us,
Vehakadosh baruch hu matsilenu miyadam.
and the Holy One, blessed be He, saves us from their hand.

Go out and learn what Laban the Aramean sought to do to Jacob our father.

Al achat, kama vechama, tova chefula umchupelet lamakom aleinu
How much more, then, and more again, is the doubled and redoubled goodness of the Omnipresent toward us:

Uvana lanu et-beit habechira lechaper al-kol-avonoteinu.
and built us the Chosen House (the Holy Temple) to atone for all our sins.
Raban gamli'el haya omer
Rabban Gamliel used to say:
Kol shelo amar shelosha devarim elu bapesach,
Whoever has not said these three things on Pesach,
Lo yatsa yedei chovato, ve'elu hen pesach, matsa, umaror.
has not fulfilled his obligation. And they are: Pesach, matzah, and maror.
Pesach shehayu avoteinu ochelim bizman shebeit hamikdash haya kayam,
The Pesach offering that our fathers ate when the Holy Temple was standing,
for what reason? Because the Holy One, blessed be He, passed over
Al batei avoteinu bemitsrayim, shene'emar
the houses of our fathers in Egypt, as it is said:
Va'amartem zevach-pesach hu l'Adonai,
And you shall say: It is the Pesach sacrifice to the Lord,
Asher pasach al-batei venei-yisra'el bemitsrayim benagepo et-mitsrayim,
who passed over the houses of the children of Israel in Egypt when He struck the Egyptians,
Ve'et-bateinu hitsil, vayikod ha'am vayishtachavu.
and our houses He saved. And the people bowed their heads and prostrated themselves.
Matsa zo she'anu ochelim, al shum ma?
This matzah that we eat, for what reason?
Al shum shelo hispik betsekam shel avoteinu
Because the dough of our fathers did not have time
Lehachamits ad shenigla aleihem melech malchei hamelachim,
to rise before the King of the kings of kings revealed Himself to them,
Hakadosh baruch hu, ugalam, shene'emar
the Holy One, blessed be He, and redeemed them. As it is said:
Vayofu et-habatsek asher hotsiu mimitsrayim ugot matsot,
And they baked the dough that they brought out of Egypt into cakes of matzot,
Ki lo chamets,
for it was not leavened,
Ki goreshu mimitsrayim velo yachelu lehitmahmeha, vegam-tseda lo-asu lahem.
for they were driven out of Egypt and could not delay, and they had also made no provisions for themselves.
Maror ze she'anu ochelim, al shum ma?
This maror that we eat, for what reason?
Al shum shemereru hamitsrim et-chayei avoteinu bemitsrayim, shene'emar
Because the Egyptians made bitter the lives of our fathers in Egypt, as it is said:
Vaymareru et-chayeihem ba'avoda kasha, bechomer uvilvenim uvchol-avoda basade
And they made their lives bitter with hard work, with mortar and with bricks and with every kind of work in the field,
Et kol avodatam asher-avedu vahem befarech.
all their work that they made them do with harshness.
Bechol-dor vador chayav adam
In every generation a person is obligated
Lirot et-atsmo ke'ilu hu yatsa mimitsrayim, shene'emar
to see himself as if he came out of Egypt, as it is said:
Vehigadta levincha bayom hahu lemor,
And you shall tell your son on that day, saying:
Ba'avur ze asa Adonai li betseti mimitsrayim.
"Because of this the Lord did for me when I went out of Egypt."
Not only our fathers did the Holy One, blessed be He, redeem,
Ela af otanu ga'al imahem, shene'emar
but us also He redeemed with them, as it is said:
Veotanu hotsi misham, lema'an havi otanu,
And us He brought out from there, in order to bring us,
to give us the land that He swore to our fathers.
Lefichach anachnu chayavim lehodot, lehalel, leshabeach, lefa'er, leromem, lehader,
Therefore we are obligated to thank, to praise, to laud, to glorify, to exalt, to honor,
to bless, to elevate, and to acclaim the One who did for our fathers and for us all these miracles:
Hotsi'anu me'avdut lecherut, miyagon lesimcha,
He brought us out from slavery to freedom, from sorrow to joy,
Ume'evel leyom tov, ume'afela leor gadol, umishi'bud ligula.
from mourning to a festival day, from darkness to great light, and from bondage to redemption.
Venomar lefanav shira chadasha halelu yah.
And let us say before Him a new song: Praise the Lord.
Halelu yah halelu avdei Adonai, halelu et-shem Adonai.
Praise the Lord! Praise, servants of the Lord; praise the name of the Lord.
Yehi shem Adonai mevorach me'ata ve'ad-olam.
May the name of the Lord be blessed from now and forever.
Mimizrach-shemesh ad-mevo'o mehulal shem Adonai.
From the rising of the sun to its setting, the name of the Lord is praised.
Ram al-kol-goyim Adonai, al hashamayim kevodo.
The Lord is high above all nations; His glory is above the heavens.
Mi k'Adonai eloheinu hamagbihi lashavet. hamashpili lirot bashamayim uva'arets.
Who is like the Lord our God, who sits on high, who looks down upon the heavens and the earth?
Mekimi me'afar dal, me'ashpot yarim evyon.
He lifts the poor from the dust, He raises the needy from the trash heaps,
Lehoshivi im-nedivim, im nedivei amo.
to seat them with nobles, with the nobles of His people.
Moshivi akeret habayit, em-habanim semecha, halelu-yah.
He seats the childless woman in her home as a joyful mother of children. Praise the Lord.
When Israel went out from Egypt, the house of Jacob from a people of foreign tongue,
Hayeta yehuda lekadesho, yisra'el mamshelotav.
Judah became His holy place, Israel His dominion.
Hayam ra'a vayanos, hayarden yisov le'achor.
The sea saw and fled; the Jordan turned back.
Heharim rakedu che'eilim, gevaot kivnei tson.
The mountains skipped like rams, the hills like young sheep.
Ma-lecha hayam ki tanus, hayarden tisov le'achor.
What is it, sea, that you flee? Jordan, that you turn back?
Heharim tirkedu che'eilim, gevaot kivnei-tson.
Mountains, that you skip like rams, hills like young sheep?
Milefenei adon chuli arets, milefenei eloha ya'akov.
Before the Master, tremble, earth, before the God of Jacob,

Shir hama'alot, beshuv Adonai et-shivat tsiyon hayinu kecholemim.
A song of ascents. When the Lord brought back the exiles of Zion, we were like dreamers.
Az yimale sechok pinu ulshonenu rina,
Then our mouths were filled with laughter and our tongues with song.

Az yomeru vagoyim, higdil Adonai la'asot im-ele.
Then they said among the nations: the Lord has done great things for these.
Higdil Adonai la'asot imanu, hayinu semechim.
The Lord has done great things for us; we were glad.
Shuva Adonai et-shevitenu ka'afikim banegev. hazore'im bedima, berina yiktsoru.
Bring back our exiles, Lord, like streams in the Negev. Those who sow in tears will reap in song.
Haloch yelech uvacho nose meshech-hazara, bo-yavo verina nose alumotav.
He goes along weeping, carrying the bag of seed; he will surely come back in song, carrying his sheaves.
